Geographical indications and cannabis
Yentyl Williams
Chapter 3 in Intellectual Property and Cannabis, 2025, pp 61-79 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter will explore the potential to protect cannabis via geographical indication (GI) laws. It will draw on the case study of the consideration of a GI for Jamaica Cannabis, Jamaica Ganja, and Jamaica Hemp to demonstrate how an inclusive GI framework can be established between cannabis producers and government institutions. The chapter will demonstrate how the Small Island Developing State (SIDS) territory of Jamaica can be a forerunner in registering and implementing an inclusive GI framework for cannabis nationally, presenting a model for other countries globally.
