Introduction: globalization and de-globalization in a turbulent era
Leila Simona Talani and
Alan Cafruny
A chapter in Globalization in a Turbulent Era, 2025, pp 1-4 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
As a result of the mutually reinforcing effects of the war in Ukraine, the lingering effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, deepening U.S.–China rivalry, and the predatory policies of the United States, not only mercantilism but also a variety of forms of coercive economic statecraft have returned to center stage. The contributors to this volume assess the causes and consequences of this deepening global turbulence. The book begins with theoretical questions and clarifications concerning previous phases of globalization. It then proceeds to an analysis of the most important trends and events of the present historical juncture including the rise of right-wing populism, climate change, Europe's deepening economic and social crises, the transformation of U.S. foreign economic policies, and the impact of rising multipolarity and U.S.–China rivalry.
