Microtransit
Steve Wright
A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 234-235 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Microtransit is an emerging, technology-enabled, on-demand transportation mode whereby small buses provide shared rides through flexible routing and scheduling in response to customers’ requests for rides. It is similar to traditional demand-responsive types of public transport, except with shorter advance reservation windows due to the use of technology combined with larger numbers of vehicles enabling real-time responses. With its flexible routing, microtransit can provide a service that complements and enhances core public transport services, acting as a feeder into established bus, tram or train lines, while also offering an efficient solution to equity and inclusion requirements for a community.
