Planning public transport
Peter White
A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 276-277 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Planning of public transport networks encompasses both infrastructure and the pattern of services operated, the former being less flexible. Land-use patterns are also critical in determining accessibility and potential demand outside work and education peaks. The latter determine both the scale of infrastructure and fleet size. Working from home has had some effect on the peak, but not as dramatic as sometimes supposed. Improved data availability greatly assists in understanding demand patterns. Distances users walk to stops determine network spacing. Automation has already changed the cost structure of urban rail systems and may do likewise for buses.
