Public engagement

Michela Le Pira

A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 282-283 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Public engagement has become a relevant part of transport planning processes oriented towards sustainable mobility. This entry covers the rationale and main benefits of adopting participatory approaches in transport planning, driven by the idea that it is better to opt for shared solutions instead of the best ones from a purely technical point of view. There are different degrees of engagement, methods and tools that can be used, but it is important to fill the gap between research and practice. Caveats of current practices in public engagement are identified, as well as promising future directions.
