Rail service planning

Nigel G. Harris

A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 318-319 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Rail service planning is a multi-objective systems engineering problem involving trade-offs between capacity, generalised cost, service quality and operating or commercial targets. Iteration is common in order to achieve efficiencies in the use of large assets such as trains, which provide large steps in the cost function. As a result, the full process from minor retimetabling through to the construction of new lines ranges between 1 and 50 years.
