Rural public transport
John D. Nelson
A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 346-347 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Public transport is difficult to provide in rural areas, which are typically characterised by low population density and issues of viability. Poor provision contributes to transport disadvantage. Measures to address this include improved spatial coverage (including provision of flexible transport services), frequency of the service, and services at night and weekends. Transport governance arrangements may be met by regional public transport associations with responsibility for planning and developing public transport networks. There is considerable expenditure on school transport services in rural areas. However, there are few examples of opening them up to the wider public.
