School travel
Fiona Crawford
A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 352-353 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
School travel is an important area of study as it contributes considerably towards morning peak period traffic as well as having implications for health and wellbeing. Whilst school travel has many similarities with other types of trips, it also has some distinctive characteristics. Education trips are typically short and safety is a substantial concern. Mode choice for education trips is influenced by a range of factors such as the characteristics of the child and the characteristics of the household, including work (and other) commitments of people involved in escorting the child to or from school.
