Abstract: Government intervention in the transport sector is extremely wide-ranging. To name just a few examples, governments provide and maintain transport infrastructure, tax and licence vehicles, subsidise and regulate public transport, set speed limits, determine rights of way, and implement vehicle emission standards. Despite trends in the liberalisation and privatisation of the transport sector over recent decades it remains one of the most regulated sectors in many countries.
