Ultra-low emissions zones (uLEZ)

Benjamin Heydecker

A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 432-433 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: An ultra-low emissions zone (uLEZ) is a part of an urban area where vehicles are required to comply with certain restrictive tailpipe emissions standards. The intention of this is to improve urban air quality for the health of people who reside, work or visit the area. Use of vehicles that exceed the defined emissions standards can be allowed subject to payment of a charge. Certain limited exemptions and discounts can be allowed. In the London (UK) uLEZ, current requirements on cars and light duty vehicles are satisfied by Euro 4 compliant petrol-fuelled vehicles and Euro 6 compliant diesel-fuelled vehicles.
