Big data and transport

A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 66-67 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The transport sector harnesses a broad spectrum of big data generated from both its unique sources and external social and administrative channels. These data sources are instrumental in understanding travel demand, optimising mobility patterns, enhancing transportation operations, bolstering infrastructure resilience, and fostering innovation in connected mobility and freight services. However, leveraging big data in transport planning and operations encounters various technical and governance challenges. Overcoming these challenges demands the implementation of a robust data governance strategy and the cultivation of a skilled workforce capable of proficiently managing, analysing, and communicating accurate information.
