Built environment and sustainable travel

A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 68-69 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Sustainable transport such as walking, cycling, and public transport, minimises environmental impact and supports UN Sustainable Development Goals, including health, resilient infrastructure, and sustainability. Despite its benefits, car travel dominates many cities, causing social, health, and environmental issues. To encourage a shift to sustainable modes, there is a need to understand travel motivations and develop infrastructure that meets needs while promoting sustainability. This requires changes in infrastructure, cultural norms, and social practices.
