City logistics

Michael G.H. Bell

A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 84-85 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: City logistics, vital for urban and suburban prosperity, is in transition due to concern about the environment and climate change, the growth of the circular economy, and the development of omnichannel retail. The blending of e-commerce with conventional retail has led to ‘click & collect’ services, the deployment of smart lockers, and the emergence of on-demand delivery by micro-mobility. The introduction of battery electric vehicles is improving air quality and reducing noise. Co-modality has yet to find its niche. In many city centre locations, road space is being reallocated in favour of pedestrians, and cycle lanes are being added, providing both opportunities and challenges for city logistics. In some cities, truck access lanes and loading docks are being located under new developments to remove truck traffic from surface streets.
