Abstract:
Safety is a key determinant of cycling. For cyclist safety to be properly assessed, it must be correctly measured. Cyclist injury rates adjust for cycling levels when calculating exposure to danger. As cycling levels increase, cyclist injury rates tend to decrease, pointing to a safety-in-numbers effect. The key to cyclist safety is safe bikeway infrastructure. Cities with a greater prevalence of bikeway facilities, most importantly protected and separated bikeway facilities, are shown to be significantly safer for cyclists.
