Efficiency measurement

Barbara T.H. Yen

A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 132-133 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Performance evaluation is critical for most fields, particularly in the transport field. Due to operational scale, transport industries are usually heavily regulated, and the most common forms are fare, service frequency, and/or operating permit. Various measurement methods have been used to measure efficiency, including the non-parametric method of Data Envelopment Analysis and the parametric method of Stochastic Frontier Analysis. Further, limitations and broader applications are also addressed with efficiency measurement in the transport field.
