Gentrification

A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 172-173 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Gentrification refers to the processes enacted by urban renewal or new investment that result in a change in the socioeconomic and cultural character of a locality, such that existing residents are displaced by a wealthier class. The relationship between transport development and gentrification processes is complex and dynamic due to the unevenly distributed social, economic and environmental impacts of integrated strategic urban policy that may emerge over time. Understanding the socioeconomic context of communities in transport planning is necessary to avoid exacerbating inequalities that lead to gentrification. Managing gentrification has implications for urban policy and planning at all governance scales.
