Informal passenger transport

A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 196-197 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Informal passenger transport (IPT), also referred to as paratransit in the African and Asian context, provides large-scale urban transit using small vehicles. IPT is the main form of urban transit in Africa's primary and secondary cities, and a significant mode in many Asian and Latin American cities where it is complementary to formal transit. The main forms in Africa are minibuses in the style of public transport, shared-taxis using saloon cars, and motorcycle taxis. Informality is observed in terms of service type, authorisation, and organisation. In recent years, initiatives have been observed to uplift and develop the IPT sector.
