On the role of culture for sustainable regional restructuring

Camilla Chlebna and Robert Hassink

Chapter 4 in Sustainable Regional Restructuring, 2025, pp 43-58 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Although industrial and regional culture have received considerable attention in economic geography, they have been little discussed in the context of sustainable regional restructuring. In this conceptual chapter, Bole's (2021) framework of industrial culture is used as a starting point from which we develop a broader concept of regional cultural dimensions in relation to sustainable regional restructuring. We argue that deep sustainable regional restructuring is more likely to be achieved through strategies that explicitly consider the full range of dimensions of regional culture. Overall, regional culture and its links to sustainable regional restructuring represent an interesting field for further research at the interface between economic geography and sustainability transitions.
