Regional green initiatives in concert

Emelie Langemyr Eriksen and Jan Ole Rypestøl

Chapter 9 in Sustainable Regional Restructuring, 2025, pp 129-144 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Today, regional industries are confronted with an increasing imperative to restructure towards more sustainable production processes. As a result, regions are now experiencing several green industry initiatives being launched concurrently within their boundaries. Research on regional innovation and evolutionary economic geography (EEG) has acknowledged that the coevolution of industrial paths can be important for regional development. Nevertheless, most research has focused on developing singular paths in different regions. Thus, we have limited knowledge of how multiple emerging regional green initiatives compete or interact with existing strong industries and each other within the same region, as well as how regional innovation system (RIS) factors might influence such interpath dynamics. This chapter addresses this knowledge gap by providing a theoretical and empirical exploration of how multiple green initiatives may influence each other and the overall regional green transition. Empirically, the chapter draws on data from the Agder region in southern Norway.
