Emerging market corporate strategies of developed country multinationals

Yusaf H. Akbar

Chapter 3 in A Research Agenda for Emerging Markets, 2026, pp 33-50 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter explores the strategies of developed economy multinational corporations (DMNCs) in developing countries, highlighting the shift from resource-seeking motives (Emerging Markets 1.0) to market-serving capabilities (2.0) as growth in developed economies slowed. The rise of emerging market multinational corporations (EMNCs) as new competitors is considered, with a growing emphasis on geopolitical factors and non-market strategies in the current phase (3.0). The chapter synthesizes institutional theory, resource-based view, transaction cost economics, and industry-based perspectives to account for DMNC approaches in developing countries. It explores how DMNCs respond to opportunities and challenges in dynamic environments, including rapid urbanization, growing middle classes, and structural weaknesses, offering a theoretically grounded discussion of competition and competitiveness in developing countries.
