Corporate social responsibility and integrity in emerging markets
Yusaf H. Akbar
Chapter 9 in A Research Agenda for Emerging Markets, 2026, pp 121-132 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter explores the change in corporate social responsibility (CSR) and business integrity from being largely marginal concerns to core strategic imperatives in developing countries. The chapter explores the ways in which high economic growth, the presence of institutional voids, as well as regulatory weaknesses in developing countries make CSR and integrity essential for DMNCs and host country competitors who seek legitimacy, trust, and competitiveness. The chapter further addresses two main research topics: the adoption and interaction of CSR practices with institutional pressures, and extant conditions under which CSR and integrity provide sustainable competitiveness rather than short-term public relations advantages. Grounded in multiple perspectives to include stakeholder theory, institutional theory, legitimacy perspectives, as well as the resource-based view, it highlights research that illustrates how contextually embedded CSR creates reputational capital and resilience. The chapter also surveys ESG trends, corruption challenges, and future research directions.
