Publication networks and vertical labour mobility in academia: a gendered perspective
Christine Benna Skytt-Larsen
Chapter 11 in Handbook of Labour Mobility, 2026, pp 173-185 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
While academic institutions have generally seen a rise in the number of women among PhD students and in temporary positions, they still suffer from a dearth of women in tenured positions. For decades, research has discussed the barriers and challenges women face in pursuing an academic career. This chapter contributes to this discussion by presenting a study of gender differences in academic positions, publication rates, and co-authorships among academic staff in the Danish geosciences. The study reveals a clear gender disparity in tenured positions, as well as in co-authorships at all career levels. Based on this, the chapter discusses gender inequality in scientific publications and argues that scientific publications are instrumental in shaping the trajectory of academic careers. Publications provide the necessary platform for researchers to achieve vertical mobility within the academic hierarchy, and gender disparities in publication networks are a direct cause of gender inequality among tenured academic staff.
