Chapter 12 in Handbook on Energy Transitions in Africa, 2026, pp 199-207 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Energy in Morocco is a very challenging sector. The agriculture sector is very important for the economy of the country as it contributes significantly to food security, job creation, and exports. The consumption of energy in agricultural activities is important, and it is characterized by an important percentage of gas and fuel used for the production and processing of agro-food products. This chapter aims to highlight the state of the art of energy consumption in the agriculture and agri-food sectors of Morocco. In addition, it aims to analyse new solutions and innovations that can contribute to reducing energy consumption, transition, and demand via renewables, and also the potential production of energy from waste and the sub-products of agri-food chains. This chapter also explores the decarbonization of the agri-food sector in order to embrace sustainability goals.
