Abstract:
The global shift toward decarbonization has elevated hydrogen – especially green hydrogen from renewable energy – to be a key component of future energy systems. Egypt's abundant solar and wind resources, strategic geographic position, and existing infrastructure place it in a strong position to become a major producer and exporter of green hydrogen. This chapter examines the techno-economic potential of hydrogen in Egypt by assessing the country's renewable energy capacity, the feasibility of large-scale hydrogen production, and the expected costs, including capital requirements, operational expenses, and the levelized cost of hydrogen. It further reviews potential export markets and highlights current national initiatives that reflect Egypt's growing commitment to hydrogen development. While opportunities are significant, challenges such as high upfront investment, regulatory gaps, and global market competition remain. The chapter concludes with policy recommendations emphasizing strong governance, increased private investment, and international partnerships to support Egypt's pathway toward a competitive hydrogen economy.
