Chapter 8 in Handbook on Energy Transitions in Africa, 2026, pp 130-146 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter investigates the transformative role of smart sustainable energy technologies in addressing rural energy challenges. Anchored in the dual pursuit of climate resilience and inclusive development, the study emphasizes the critical shift from fossil fuels to renewable energy, highlighting technologies such as solar photovoltaics, biogas digesters, and hybrid systems. Through a systematic literature review, the chapter explores how these innovations enhance energy accessibility, environmental sustainability, and socio-economic empowerment. It evaluates their potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, alleviate energy poverty, and support local livelihoods, health, and education systems. Despite their promise, the research identifies key implementation barriers, including high capital costs, limited technical capacity, and fragmented policy frameworks. The chapter argues for integrated approaches – combining policy reform, financial innovation, and skills development to unlock the full potential of sustainable energy in rural Zimbabwe. Ultimately, the chapter contributes to advancing Sustainable Development Goals 7 and 13 in vulnerable communities.
