The dual role of government in transforming urban food systems in Berlin
Stefanie Lyn Becker
Chapter 14 in The Elgar Companion to Food System Transformation for Sustainable Development, 2026, pp 201-207 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Urban community gardens have the potential to contribute to food system transformation and the Sustainable Development Goals. However, previous research has suggested several barriers to their ability to do so. This chapter explores the enabling environment for community gardening, specifically municipal policy and infrastructure. In doing so, it examines the relationship between community gardens and local government, finding that governments both help and hinder community gardening.
