Chapter 6 in The Elgar Companion to Food System Transformation for Sustainable Development, 2026, pp 72-87 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) emphasise reducing inequalities in all sectors, including food production and consumption systems. While the historic Green Revolution significantly increased food production, it exacerbated gender and social inequality and environmental degradation, failed to address malnutrition, and displaced women from agricultural jobs. In the past few decades, we have observed shifts in the food production and consumption systems due to social, environmental, economic, climatic, and dietary changes happening around the world. To address these shifts and contribute especially to SDG 5 (gender equality) in food systems, this chapter suggests an inclusive framework that emphasises decentralised human agency, equitable resource distribution, and climate resilience. It supports gender-responsive, climate-smart agriculture, which is crucial for ensuring food system transformation by empowering women as key agents of change. The framework promotes a holistic approach by focusing on healthy diets, fair value chains, and resilience to environmental and economic shocks.
