Mindful approaches to seeing possibilities: from critical to transformative educational ethnography1
Marjorie Elaine
Chapter 22 in Research Handbook on the Anthropology of Education, 2026, pp 223-233 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter illustrates how “mindfulness” practices can enhance our capacity to step out of our own perspectives and to see in new ways, by helping us to notice what we notice (and what we do not), see beyond the categories of our culture, listen more deeply and empathetically to our participants, and forge compassionate connections. The chapter begins with a review of critical ethnographies of education, showing the value of this work and suggesting future directions that can help advance the aim of social transformation by identifying both problems and possibilities.
