Centering lives in between: participatory approaches to ethnography with diaspora youth

Abstract: This chapter takes up the call to challenge methodological nationalism in the anthropology of immigrant education by highlighting methodological alternatives informed by a diasporic stance: engaged and participatory methods that center the experience of transnationalism and displacement and decenter the nation and its assimilationist frameworks. Inspired by diaspora studies’ attention to the “diasporic imaginary” and by an emergent tradition of participatory action research with youth in education, I examine the use of dialogic inquiry groups, cultural and artistic expression, and adaptations of teatro popular (popular theater) in research to engage transnational youth in narrating and (re)imagining their lives in between.
