Chapter 27 in Research Handbook on the Anthropology of Education, 2026, pp 275-287 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
In this chapter we consider how researchers use anthropological methods to identify and leverage power in designs for learning. Rooted in the interdisciplinary field of the Learning Sciences, we discuss how power has been implicitly addressed in the work of design and how it has been considered more explicitly in the last decade. To highlight innovations in this arena, we present two case studies involving the collaborative design for learning. In each case, the researchers/designers draw on anthropological insights and methods to engage paradoxes of power. Doing so through the design of culturally informed technologies supports the cultivation of more agentic learning for participants. We conclude with recommendations for further inquiry into the intersections of power, learning, and design.
