Co-designing in-relation for transformational practice: storied vignettes of co-learning Ethnic Studies pedagogies with educators

Abstract: In this chapter we describe how co-design methodologies created alternative education spaces for mutual learning and transformational practice in K-12 schools and teacher preparation programs. Based on our collaborative approach to exploring Ethnic Studies pedagogical frameworks with teachers, teacher educators, and researchers, we examined how learning in-relation (re)shaped our methodological approaches to studying teacher learning, informed joint pedagogical sensemaking, and challenged normative schooling practices that perpetuate racialized inequities. Our analysis revealed two key themes about co-designing in-relation for transformational practice: (1) grappling with political and ethical responsibilities as researchers when (re)positioned as co-learners; and (2) creating dialogical tools that re-center the knowledge of communities of color and other marginalized groups. Through vignettes, we illustrate how learning in-relation opened up theoretical and methodological spaces for co-constructing and repairing knowledge about marginalized learners, and how co-design enabled us to collectively sustain alternative educational possibilities within the realities of schooling contexts.
