Intimacy in and with data: affective landscapes of learning and doing educational research

Abstract: Expanding upon educational anthropology and relationality through feminist theory, materialism, and affective theory, we attend to intimacy in and with data. Proceeding from two ethnographic vignettes, we look at how bodies enter into contact with other bodies (material, human, non-human, and here and far) to engage with the affective and relational dimensions of learning contexts as contingent, multiple, and ambivalent. We situate our discussions of the vignettes within affective landscapes of science learning and migration, with their reproductive and productive capacities for relating to more-than-human bodies, materials, and science learning. Recognizing our affective selves in the data, we simultaneously reflect on our intimate encounters with data and related response-abilities as researchers, circulating and attending to the narratives and discourses around bodies, materials, and affects, including desirous moments of immigrant youth and students engaged with science.
