Abstract:
The construct of community-sustaining pedagogies is offered as a fruitful approach for broadening participation along STEM academic and occupational pathways. Extending on Paris's 2012notion of culturally sustaining pedagogies, our project operationalized a model of community-sustaining pedagogies through the development of tools, practices, and model lessons that integrate language, culture, and STEM knowledge building. Sharing design principles and stories from our work with teachers, students, and families in rural communities, I reflect on what evolving anthropological views of culture, community, and ethnographic methods can contribute to broadening participation in STEM. At the same time, work applying STEM to daily life may have something to offer as the anthropology of education continues to evolve. Engaging diverse stakeholders together in STEM activities can lead to broader conversations about how STEM influences our communities, as well as the ways that communities can exert more agency over STEM in their lives.
