Abstract: Longue durée (long duration) refers to the study of deep historical structures and patterns that extend over a long period of time, often centuries or even millennia. It was pioneered in the 1920s by the Annales School, which became one of the most influential movements in modern historiography. It is most often associated with Fernand Braudel, but other scholars have also adopted the approach. It rarely features in the organisation studies literature, probably because the organisation as the unit of analysis is not aligned with the approach. In addition, longue durée studies do not produce the type of theory that organisation studies tends to value.
