Abstract: Follett developed a theory and method of creative or dynamic relating, whereby one builds a vibrant life in tandem with building a community that supports that pursuit. Follett's research subjects were herself and her city – Boston, where she founded and led civic groups and projects. She wrote her theory based on this experience (1918, 1924). After World War I, she grounded her research in the field of business administration (Metcalf and Urwick 1940), with the aim to develop a science and profession of management. Follett did not make lasting progress due to the field's academisation.
