Abstract: Memorials are socially constructed reference points – sites of memory – that represent claims of recognition of past events. However, the social-mediated experience with the past through memorials (in their different representations, simultaneously combining the material, symbolic and functional dimensions) is, at the same time, the outcome of several negotiated experiences with the present and pretended futures. Because it is socially mediated and organized, the construction of memorials is paradoxical. It involves the continuous circulation of conflicting acts of remembrance: memories can be shared or suffocated, reclaimed or buried. They will always be at the heart of social and organizational disputes.
