Abstract: The Palgrave Handbook of Management History is a 600,000-word encyclopaedic reference work that explores virtually every aspect of management: its origins, progression, the debates that currently transfix business and management academia and the trends that are transforming Africa, Asia, Europe, the Pacific and Latin America. Unlike many edited works, the Handbook is intellectually coherent. While the book's authors included both foes and friends of industrial capitalism, most chapters suggest that the impact of modern business and management has been largely positive. It nevertheless takes seriously, and engages with, the critical and postmodernist strands of thought that increasingly characterise academia.
