Abstract: Periodisation is a historical method for organising historical time and events into periods. It involves distilling experienced time into coherent segments based on contextual factors, relies on source criticism and is shaped by the researcher. In dividing time into manageable segments, periodisation can underpin narratives, highlight events or actions, identify patterns and causal relationships and explain phenomena. Offering new possibilities for interpretation, contribution and action, periodisation can enrich how we deal with historical time, whether as a research method for theory development and contextualisation or as a practice underpinning strategic storytelling, directing action and challenging the tacit implication of dividing time for organisational and social life.
