Perspectivism

Ana Silvia Rocha Ipiranga and Luma Louise Sousa Lopes

Chapter 126 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Historical Organisation Studies, 2026, pp 444-448 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Understanding how people make and give meaning to their world is important for understanding the meanings constructed from a cultural perspective of history. The theory of Amerindian perspectivism proposes that different species inhabit the world and that they give meaning to it through different points of view. This idea is supported by the existence of multiple natures under the same culture (multinaturalism), where each nature assumes its point of view (equivocality) and sees the other and their experiences as distinct (reflexive displacement). Methodologically, the narrator is considered to be the one capable of presenting the connection of different things in the same context, considering the narrative process based on the heterogeneity of the narrated experiences.
