Abstract: Time-as-rhythm embraces approaches to temporality that emphasise discontinuity, fragmentation, heterogeneity, lag, superimpositions or circularity rather than a unified, linear, future-oriented and chronologically uniform conception of time-as-progress. Although many contemporary historians and philosophers of science have paid particular attention to rhythm in their investigation, questioning the conceptualisation of time, the work of Bachelard and Lefebvre is of particular importance as they both mobilised the concept of ‘rythmanalysis’ to dialectically examine rhythm and arrhythmia, using it either as a lens or as a mode of analysis. Outside music, the analysis of rhythms is also prominent in physics, biology and anthropology, often via the use of metaphors such as composition, resonance, wave or vibration.
