Abstract: Archives are dynamic spaces shaped by multiple social relations and the interpretive acts of producers of registers, archivists and researchers. This text defines the concept and explores the multifaceted nature of archives, emphasising their role in maintaining and fostering narratives. Traditional institutional archives, quasi-archives and counter-archives are examined as interconnected forms of register-keeping, each reflecting decisions about inclusion, exclusion and meaning. Particular attention is given to quasi-archives, which provide methodological flexibility in analysing unstructured data, and counter-archives, which document marginalised histories and challenge institutional silences. This work highlights the performative nature of archives in opening windows to the past.
