Abstract: Ego-documents represent sources in which historical selves are revealed whether by choice or by circumstance. While the categorization of sources has long been integral to historical inquiry, its significance has so far been underappreciated in historical organization studies. However, discussions surrounding source typologies can be crucial for fostering comparative analysis and prompting reflections on divergent approaches to sources. Examining ego-documents, we evaluate the advantages and limitations of this source category, review the historiography on them and provide two brief examples of their analysis. We summarize by stressing different ways in which ego-documents can be used in historical work.
