Chapter 61 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Historical Organisation Studies, 2026, pp 227-228 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
In this entry we focus on the role of gender, and its application on business history over time. We begin with a definition that clarifies the difference between gender and sex through a comparison of the two major terms (i.e., gender and sex). We then examine how the terms ‘gender’ and ‘gendering’ have been questioned and downplayed has gender neutral or the contributions of women have been ignored. In the next section, we will lay out the differences between gender and sex, gendering and organizational culture and the impact of gendering on discrimination (see Oakley 1972; Acker and Van Houten 1974).
