History as method

Abstract: It has long been argued that historiography can inform management and organisation studies (MOS). However, the (meta) discussion on this topic does not directly advance theory. Born out of dissatisfaction with this circumstance, the notion ‘history as method’ refers to the practice of integrating historiographical methods into empirical strategies for performing theoretically motivated studies in the management domain. It is underpinned by two principles: (1) ‘dual integrity’, or demonstrable competence in both history writing and MOS; and (2) methodological pluralism, which is an orientation towards advancing/extending the historiographical toolbox with reference to particular debates in MOS.
