Intellectual history
Lauren Eaton
Chapter 88 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Historical Organisation Studies, 2026, pp 326-329 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This entry overviews intellectual history as a method for studying the emergence, development, and contestation of ideas within their historical contexts. While the field has developed from its early origins, intellectual history remains a valuable tool for management and organisation studies to understand how business ideas are constructed, challenged, and institutionalised. Examples from leadership theory, institutional theory, and scientific management illustrate its varying applications, particularly its capacity for critiquing dominant perspectives and uncovering alternative intellectual traditions.
