Leadership

Bert A. Spector

Chapter 97 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Historical Organisation Studies, 2026, pp 353-356 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: In the discourse on organizational dynamics, the two constructs – management and leadership – have coexisted for over a century. It has not, however, been an easy or stable coexistence. At times, the terms have been used interchangeably. They eventually came to be separated, at first in complimentary ways and then as conflicting approaches to the twin requirements of core stability and flexible dynamism in all organizations. This entry examines that complex, frequently shifting pas de deux and the dynamics that shaped the discourse.
