For-profit sector
Dominik Schwizer
A chapter in Sport Management in Europe, 2025, pp 90-91 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The increasing commercialization and professionalization of sport has made management more complex. The for-profit sector has played a pivotal role in adapting to these changes and influencing the evolution of sport organizations. Part II of this Handbook describes the dynamics of this sector, emphasizing the role and development of professional sport leagues, listed companies and sport brands. These private organizations generate substantive economic value in the European context. In order to achieve their financial goals, they must anticipate and address the diverse needs of consumers or fans, as well as respond to global trends such as digitalization and societal changes. The four chapters in Part II explore the sector's impact, offering insights into current economic conditions and future trends. As the pressure to innovate, engage stakeholders and ensure sustainability grows, these chapters provide valuable guidance and practical tools for sport managers navigating the economic challenges of the European model of sport.
