Abstract: This chapter introduces resource nationalism (RN), defining key terms and exploring the history of RN movements around the world and over time. Distinguishing four waves of resource nationalism, the authors chart the course of policies, practices, and interventions to assert control over natural resource extraction and increase the economic, social, or political benefits accruing to a particular group or groups to the exclusion of others. This chapter also serves to introduce the parts and chapters of this Handbook, highlighting the depth of scholarship with specific geographical or thematic focus (Part I), emphasizing different legal and institutional approaches (Part II), underscoring the role of social movements in RN (Part III), spotlighting key commodities at the centre of RN movements and debates (Part IV), and drawing special attention to the current wave of RN centred on critical minerals and green transition in an era of renewed strategic competition (Part V).
