Resource nationalism in oil and gas

Abstract: Oil fuels global trade and military power. During and after the transition to carbon capitalism, control of petroleum resources has often been a major component of competition between nations and of the struggle for catch-up industrialization. This chapter traces the history of petro-nationalism, focusing on struggles for national control in the second half of the twentieth century, the possibilities of oil-backed blessings and curses, and the role of petroleum geopolitics in conflict in the twenty-first century. While oil and gas may not explain contemporary political phenomena on their own, it is generally a factor that cannot be ignored in global affairs and the study of international order.
