Nickel, mineral geopolitics, and resource nationalism

Chapter 26 in Handbook of Resource Nationalism, 2026, pp 406-423 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
In the wake of the boom in energy transition minerals (ETMs) and the impulse of resource nationalism (RN), Indonesia, hosting 42 per cent of known nickel reserves, has seen a reorientation of state intervention under the banner of green growth strategies. Central to these strategies is an enhanced emphasis on industrial policies and export bans that have given shape to mineral geopolitics and supply chain stability. This chapter departs from mainstream approaches which readily reduce the rise of RN to a statist economic strategy, a popular ideological tool, or an antithesis of economic liberalisation. By situating RN within the conjunction of capitalist transformation and the emerging mineral geopolitics, it seeks to delve into the driving forces behind the rise of RN on ETMs including but not limited to state activism and market dynamism that reshape the trajectory of RN in Indonesia as well as Chinese dominance over the nickel industry.
